T-ГУРТ позволяет изменять зерновые так, что генетически улучшенный признак, внесенный в растения, не активируется до тех пор, пока они не будут обработаны специальными химикатами, продаваемыми компаниями, занимающимися биотехнологиями. Фермер не сможет использовать улучшение, если он не приобрел активирующий состав у владельца патентов на семена. Технология защищена на уровне отдельного признака – поэтому T-ГУРТ (прим.: t – trait – признак, свойство, особенность).
